Working on my Weakness ...

The Green Man and the hanging horse have been recycled. Not my style, and not looking very inspiring.
I picked up a great book on composition a week ago, and am avidly devouring it. Composition is definitely my weak spot in painting, and I am working to improve that. I appreciate that my technique is good, but without strong design, there is not much to an artwork.
I've started the two paintings with the aim of creating something much more striking and impactful. Neither of the above paintings is finished; they need a lot more strengthening of value and color to integrate the subject into a cohesive and hopefully striking piece of art. Onwards and upwards ...

As always, you comments are most welcome.

  1. Hi Kyathryn,

Facing toward our own weakness is not easy. I have a lot of points of weakness. First of all, flowers. That is the most difficult object for me.I'm not sure which part is your weakness. Still I love your colours. Nobody copy your works.

  2. We are always our own toughest critics, don't you think? Maybe it's a good thing stops us stagnating. Heaven knows, I'm never really 100% happy with any of my stuff!

Thanks for all the support btw - much appreciated, Kathryn.

  3. Looking forward to seeing what you do once you've digested the new book! The chickens are coming along nicely - I hope they don't end up recycled. x

  4. Working on your weakness is the sign of a true artist. And I am sure you would have picked up a lot from the book, which are going to take your work to the next level. Waiting to see the finished pieces.

  5. Composition is not my strong point either. It is a good idea to find a book about this subject.

  6. Honestly I always thought your art was striking, but I suppose we always feel insecure about something. My week points are so many I sometimes almost get depressed from frustration ! So far your hen look great and very energetic .-)

  7. Dear Kathryn:) I love your chickens:) The first one has his one leg up. That's so cute! I love the strong line under the wing of the second. Beautiful colors. I didn't noticed you having problems with composition? I want to say a lot to you, but I won't. I'm happy your posting again:)

  8. The green guy just wasn't for you. You got the message you're not a green guy gal. A dead horse is also not you; you adore the animal. Now these chickens are special. They are beautiful and you love them. I love what you are doing with them. By the time you finish, they will look as strokable as a dog or Mr. FP.
As for composition, just getting a book on it says you're on your way. Let us know any great pointers you come across.

  9. The Walking Hen painting's composition is great! I see a handful of movement; and can't wait for the finished product.
    Thanks,
    Irina
