The Carpster
It took a bit of "intestinal fortitude" to get to the point where I could lift some of what I'd done to create the illusion of ripples on the water surface. I marked it off with a dinner plate on the outside, then measured off the inside circles. I did it in an irregular manner, to get more of a look of reality. I also darkened the orange of the face, and some of the scales.
I think what is left to do is to give the body more depth with some form shadow, and darken the pectoral and tail fins. What do you think needs doing?
... a beginning
carp,
fish,
painting process,
painting water,
ripples in water,
watercolor

It has been great looking at the progress of this one. And it is coming out really well. Really looking forward to the final finshed work.
ReplyDeleteYour work is wonderful,Kathryn. This carp is coming long so well.It almost looks three dimensional!
ReplyDeleteI recently read a book by Joye Moon-Exploring Textures in Watercolor- where she demonstrated the technique of 'pouring'.I was intrigued by it.
I like what you did here.Congrats.
You are spot on with what you plan to do. Go slowly adding things. I know when I get to this place I start going too fast and ruin a beautiful thing.

I'd agree with your plans. Give it some more depth and you'll be golden. This is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great work, the only thing I could think of eventually doing would be some more shadow under the body of the carp. But again..beautiful work! xx
ReplyDeleteHe achieved the effect of water perfectly and naturally, I loved the impromptu food dish:) that's being creative.
ReplyDeleteKathryn is already so beautiful, I do not know if I would again move,
but really working with some shadows on the pinna gain depth.
Congratulations!
Beautiful! Love how you created the ripples, a dinner plate is genius. I've used pennies and various coins before to make grapes. Your painting is looking fantastic!
ReplyDeletehi katherine. i think this one look very very good> just a bit of darks on the left side of the carp should be sufficient to give it a finished look> the ripples are perfect> thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous Kathryn! I love the push and pull of warm and cool colors in the fish and the water. I can't wait to see it finished. It's a knockout. :)
ReplyDeleteLovely fish. The water is beautifully done. Love your blog
ReplyDeleteHe's looking good!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd agree with the shadows, to anchor him a little.
I would be scared to offer any input because I like it - Reeeeeeally like it! So, I know I would be afraid to go any further if it were me! :0)
ReplyDeletejust lovely! i absolutely love the colors, the calmness. i think you should trust your instincts, it's coming out just beautifully!
ReplyDeleteYou're making me want to paint fish. I love the color, the drawing and the ripples.
