I started with the warm reflected light around the base of the window ... |
I very lightly painted the shadows w/w ... |
Worked on the wings and legs ... |
Some yellow {aureolin + quin. gold} on the body ... |
Started some of the detail - mind you, with something this small {about 5.5 x 7.5 inches}, it's almost all detail. |
This is as far as I got today. It may need a bit more oomph! |
This was the reference photo. The soft contrast of the cool and warm shadows, and the reflected light and images are what attracted me. As always, your comments are ever welcome. |
How cool is that! We love it! It will be so gorgeous- we just know it!

Oh Kathryn, what a fabulous subject for a painting! I love it!
ReplyDeleteVery cool Kathryn! A departure from your usual work, but I think it's very interesting. ☺
ReplyDeleteKathryn this is beautiful! And I love the fact that you chose to find beauty in this very unexpected place. :))
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty far. The subject is as different as my shoe heap. I like it. I can feel the insect's fuzzy behind.
ReplyDeleteOoh, this really must be good because it brought me out in to a mild sweat! I am TERRIFIED of wasps, bees, anything black, yellow and buzzzzzy! It is very good already and I must say a very surprising subject and one I wouldn't have thought of! :0)
ReplyDeleteAs usual, it looks like it's heading in a beautiful direction. I just love the colors of those long shadows!! So fun, as ever, to see your process.
ReplyDeleteWe see art everywhere, don't we?!!! this is wonderful Kathryn. I want to see this one finished!
ReplyDeleteThe transformation from the flat surface of the paper to a 3D perspective is amazing. I watched a slide show from your photos and it is cool to see how the insect "comes alive"
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Irina
My God. How do you guys paint such tiny creatures. Your washes as always are really clean. I think some stronger tones in the background shadow would bring out the subject very well adding even more feeling of light. What do you say!!
ReplyDeleteThose two little hairy guys...you really are brave to attempt them..they have so much going on!But the shadows are really nice.Love them ....
