FRUSTRATED!
Is the sky too dark? Are the mountains not dark enough? Is the abutment too wishy-washy? I've been pecking away at this off and on all day so far, and I am not impressed. Time to leave it for a while ...
This is it in black/white, to check values. It all looks like a glop of mid-values to me, but then it is supposed to be a cloudy scene. I don't know.
Kathryn, this is wonderful. Your hard work is really showing. You're going to have a painting here that's something you can crow about. And the subject is so different for you, but it looks like you have a talent for the architectural.
Oh my, you are somewhere in the middle stages and don't know how to proceed! Just leave it for a while, I would say, until you know what to do. It looks fine to me, but I know the frustrated feeling! Have a nice weekend!
I rather like the pale nature of this, although it does look like mostly mid tones in the b/w image. Not every painting has to have stark contrasts, often I find that high key colour, mood and feel all make the painting what it is, as well as the tonal value structure. It’s a difficult call, because if you darken areas it will change the mood and light dramatically. Why not pump up the contrast of the b/w image in your computer software, then paint another painting based on that and see how it works?
I think this is coming out very well. I like the sky, the tower/ pillar stands out nicely against it. The b/w version suggests to me that the mountains need to be a little darker, but overall its all coming out very very well. Best wishes,
I think if you're going for cloudy or foggy that you have it perfectly, maybe a bit of darker values where the sea meets the sky? But I really do like it Kathryn and I think it's coming along beautifully. :)
I always find it SO helpful to look at painting on black and white. It really does help to see the values. This is looking lovely! I always find that if I make my darks as DARK as I possibly can, the lights sing out! Maybe just darken those darks and your there :0)
Don't be frustrated, Kathryn because I like it VERY much. I like the "subtle" colors....I would only darken the darker part of the bridge..(a bit) BUT that's all. I love it.

ReplyDeleteJust keep picking away at it, Kathryn. I think you are headed in the right direction here.

ReplyDeleteNo worries lady.. Just forget it and work on something else.. Pick it up when you have almost forgotten about it... And then it will work.

ReplyDeleteHello Kathryn:) It seems you have sitting too long too close on your painting. Leave it for a day. You will see it is a beautiful painting!
