What the ??? ... or ... Another Watercolor Mystery

Yesterday, I had been trying to do background washes without masking. It got to be just too awkward. So I let the painting dry, and applied masking to the flower and leaves, let it dry, and started applying washes of orange and green. The above photo is after at least four washes ...

... and this photo is after about ten washes. It really is a beautiful, glowing background. Unfortunately, when I was taking the masking off, I found it to feel like it had been mixed with honey, so sticky and tacky to the touch, and a real stinker to get off the paper. The masking did not come off well, and thin filmy bits remained as well as an overall sticky feel to the paper. I was hoping to be able to do more with the flower and leaves, but this is it. Thankfully, I have another one traced onto paper, and I've started painting the background.
I'm curious - has anyone else had this happen with masking fluid?

Thank you for dropping by! Your comments are always welcome!

  1. Bonjour Kathryn,
Le fond que vous avez obtenu est très beau.
Personnellement, je n'utilise pas de liquide de masquage.
Je peins patiemment autour de mon dessin, et j'ai parfois des sueurs froides! (^‿^)

  3. HI Kathryn, I hate masking fluid. I've used it before but stopped and don't use it at all anymore. I had done a lovely painting of a winter snow scene and years later it turned yellow, horrible.. from where I had used the masking fluid. It's sticky, goey, doesn't come off well, I paint around my whites. It's harder to do but worth it to me. I did use the best masking fluid I could find.. but it still was terrible. Your work is lovely as always, love to you,Diana

  4. Oh, after all that work! So sorry about the masking fluid. I imagine it was just old stuff - I don't think it holds up well after months. I use Pebeo Drawing Gum and can tell when it's getting old by the ammonia smell and the clumps that build in the bottle :(. Hope your next rose is even more beautiful.

  6. I've never had masking fluid become sticky but if I've left it on too long or use on hot press, it's hard to get off or it just come off. Was your masking fluid old?
In spite of your problem with the masking fluid, this rose painting is luminous and beautiful!

  7. Hi Kathryn,
This happened to me with the old Winsor&Newton masking liquid once. I've pretty much ruined the painting.
Another possibility for masking to do such thing is if you were holding the hairdryer too close to the masked part while drying the background.
In any cases, it is sad to see the beautiful painting to be ruined.
    But, never give up!
    Irina
