Well, I Like the Background ... or ... Portrait-painting 101

It always amazes me how different it all looks with a background. So far, I like the ground, but the face needs much work. Thankfully, with the darkness behind, I have a fair bit of leeway to play with darks in the face.

I posted this just for comparison - showing how dark the face and hair looks here, as compared to the above photo.

As for the woodland scene, I feel it got too heavy too soon. it's looking over-worked. I think I will flip the sheet over and try something else.

Thank you for dropping by! Your comments are always welcome.

you have a way of making magic happen,,,so we just sit and watch as the magic unfolds.

  2. Not overworked at all - just good, strong darks! And the portrait is looking very good.

  3. Dear Kathryn I think your woodland scene is gorgeous and not over worked at all. Your art is amazing. Really does make a difference too when you put in a background...his face did look so much lighter. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

  5. Dark background really brings the face forward. Its going to be a beautiful portrait, Kathryn.I am amazed how you manage to make your paintings sparkle even after so many washes. If I work on a painting for more than two sessions,it is bound to end up in the bin! My colors go muddy and the paper looses its sheen when I try this method ..

  7. I was just thinking myself how much lighter the face looks with the darkness added behind... It's a very interesting composition and it's great to see it progress. And I like the woodland scene... I was thinking how strong the sense of light is! Can't see anything wrong with it! :0)
