Hmmm, my feeling is you've taken it from being an "illustration" to a full-blown "painting." Does that make sense? Neither is superior to the other, just different. Both are wonderful in their own right and serve their own purpose. Super!
Yes, I like him better with the background. It suits your style of realistic painting, I think.
