The painting is just looking very weird to me. I've edited both to black/white to see if I can see what's wrong, and to my eye, the painting is not that far off. But the colored painting looks strange. Maybe darkening the body some more, and a graded wash on the neck, and some more serious shadowing on the face ...? I still have the 1st one of Maddy, with only the background painted; with that, I was going to try to "melt" her body into a darker background. Sounds good, but the execution is definitely going to be a challenge. As always, all comments are welcome!!!
The head is perfect, but there is something about the neck that doesn't look right. I think you have to darken the body to differentiate it from the neck, otherwise the whole body just flows together in one. In fact if I look at the reference photo, the body is very dark. But a part from that it is incredibly similar to the photo...almost a photocopy ! xox
ReplyDeleteYou are on the right track. I see the muscles lines of the body are too straight up and down, doesn't show the roundnes of the belly and yes just under the face needs to be darker. It is an awkward pose for sure but you are off to a beautiful start. Just some tweaking will do.

I agree with Jane. Try squinting. It helps me to see.
ReplyDeletecoming along beautifully gunkie! i never usually comment, but since you asked...i think it's the neck as well. the darkest part leads the eye to read a really skinny neck but the area to the left of that fools the eye into seeing a really wide neck at the same time. i think finding and making the area behind the actual neck line will define it better. other than that beautifully done and i hope i haven't offended.
ReplyDeleteI think you are correct in that the horse needs more darkening, for example in the photo the horses body beneath its head is darker than the rest of the horse, not sure about the neck doesn't look that bad but,I have noticed that you have extended it and that this is not shown in the photo so not quite sure if the extended part of the neck is the correct shape or size, but as artists we have the freedom to create ,no need to stress out and to follow a photo exactly.
ReplyDeleteKathryn, Maddy looks very good. You do such excellent paintings. I noted that you are showing the line of the upper lip more straight as it goes back to the end of the mouth. I see more variations/curves in that line or is it just my eyes?
ReplyDeletejust luscious colors - so rich and colorful, and the expression ! just wonderful. I'll take it as is. By now you've taken a look at the left side of the neck - the "guzzle" is defined, then the viewer wonders about where the neck joins the head. The photo darkens the body and melds into darkness which accentuates the head. We have more information than needed on the body. Keep the fabulous head and do something unpredictable with the body. Or send it to me as is - I love it.
ReplyDeleteRight-I think that the pose is awkward and you just need the head and neck. The body looks weird in the photo as well.
ReplyDeleteYou paint horses very well, I dare say.
