This is what he looked like before I went wild with the ultramarine blue. |
And after ... I don't know why I use it. I almost always end up with a fiasco. |
I went to bed around 10:30 last night, and had to get up at midnight to take good ol' Trigger for a shower. I let it dry overnight, and then started playing with it after I rode Bruno. |
This is after several thin applications. I use relatively thin paint, apply with a large soft sable round, and then blend as I imagine one blends oil paint, with a stiffer, synthetic flat. |
I have used this technique successfully, I believe, with these two other horse portraits. This is Bruno, looking very suave and debonair. |
This is my mare Sweetie, who is no longer with me. She was a gorgeous girl! As ever and always, your comments are most welcome. |
You are so brave...... I like the additional colors in the background and am looking forward to seeing the next step!
ReplyDeleteThe portraits you've done are amazing Kathryn. I think you exceeded yourself :0)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Irina
see! it turned out great. Watercolor takes GUTS and you have it. I taught myself watercolor by doing these same things and learned lots. These are the things nobody would do as a beginning artist- makes you definitely in the professional category . BTW your mare and her portrait are stunning.
ReplyDeleteHa! You like to make our hearts race, don't you?
ReplyDeleteI quite liked Trigger before the shower, but after the shower and re-application, he's shaping up to be stunning!
I think your 'horse' paintings are really fantastic, how you do it I don't know. I'm sure Trigger will end up there with the other 'greats'
ReplyDeleteYou toned the blue down...so good ! And the two 'oldies' are astonishing beautiful...you will do a new masterpiece with Trigger, I know it . xx
ReplyDeleteYou are so brave! I agree it looks much better without the ultramarine!
ReplyDeleteoh wow how brave of you, and it's worked, looking amazing those backgrounds are gorgeous
ReplyDeleteOOh you were quite brave! I think its looking better now.Good work!
ReplyDeleteSign and frame!!
ReplyDeleteYou've been successful with this before and will be again - the ultramarine was too much until you broke it up with the browns to give it some variety. It's working!
ReplyDeleteI really like the final look after the wash-off and reapplication of paint -- the horse is very delicately painted and looks more in harmony with the more subtle, less saturated background!
ReplyDeleteYou are headed (pun) in the right direction. It does take guts.
ReplyDeleteWell, they are all wonderful and I'm sure Bruno will be a masterpiece! At the moment I am memorized by the middle painting. It is STUNNING!!! His eye looks so like it is looking at me. Wow!! :0)
ReplyDeleteLokking at one Trigger after the other, I would say this is perfect.... and then.... I must agree with you, the last version is the best! :-)
