I'd Rather Be Hibernating ...

After several glazes of aureolin, quin. siena, phthalo blue and a touch of indanthrone, this is the result.  I like this  outcome better than the previous one - it has a cleaner look to it.

Most of the painting time was spent creating spots, shadows and reflections.  I much prefer this version to the last one. The focus of patterns and reflections is more apparent, more refined. Whoa ... I might even say I LIKE this one!!!
As for hibernating, I know I'd be safer! The day before yesterday, I was sent flying off Bruno's back. I honestly don't have any idea what got into him. It might have been something weird he saw next door, where my very strange neighbor lives. She has been around horses for more than 60 years, and she still does some incredibly thoughtless things to her horses. Anyway, Bruno did about 3 huge leaps and/or bucks, and I was airborne after the third one. I was still hanging onto the reins when I made a soft landing. I quickly let go the reins, as it is very dangerous to be flat out on the ground with an excited horse nearby. I wasn't hurt - shaken up, with a few sore muscles. But I did get back on and finish the ride, and His Highness was MUCH more agreeable.
Yesterday I took the dogs out for a long walk. I let them off-leash, and they were good about returning when called. However, at one point, the younger one got a whiff of something worth following, and crawled under the fence to give chase. I spent at least 1/2 an hour yelling for her, following the fence line, but she would not come back. So I had to scramble over the fence, and crawl through the brush. It was all mud, puddles, soggy long grass and blackberry brambles. [I was still finding thorns in my hair this morning!] I finally caught her, took her to the spot where she could crawl under, pulled her through, tied her up, crawled over myself, and headed for home. Man, I was angry!!! So, between the dogs and Bruno, I really think I would be safer hibernating.

As always, your comments are most welcome.

  1. So much for 'man's best friend' when there is a tasty scent in the air. So sorry about your tumble. At some point your four legged friends need to understand that you are breakable. But maybe he caught a whiff of that irrestible scent... Happy 2013 to you!

  2. So glad you had a soft landing! If you decide to hibernate, I hope you wake up occasionally to do some more painting. The cows are divine!

  6. Oh, dear! I am just so glad when you went head-over-heels, you were not seriously injured! As for dogs, I have never owned one but know they run and chase inticing smells and can't be stopped, it seems :( Of course, cats do the same thing - and stalk bunnies and birds and :( See, I'm talking myself out of getting a new pet! ha ha Love this painting - didn't see the finished version prior so will now go back to see it. Happy New Year (I tend to hibernate whenever the snow hits and it gets below 30F!)

  7. I love the luminous effects created my your meticulous glazing -- it reminds me of Catherine Anderson who always glazes 20-30 times to create that inner "glow" of a painting. I do like this one much better that the last you did of the same subject. I think the colors are cleaner and more pure. I applause you for being willing to take on a difficult subject multiple times until you feel you have got it right! In an obsessive way we are truly very similar.

I couldn't help but laugh at your description of the chase -- thanks to you I am getting bit by bit how the life lived on a farm was truly like! It is filled with things that you cannot really foresee, less to control. I hope you are ok and not hurt in any serious way -- it is hard to imagine Bruno could do this -- from your portrait of her I cannot imagine a more lovely and amiable companion! But the unexpected happens sometimes... Please do take care! You have my best wishes...

  8. Really, really, really LOVE the cows, Kathryn - they are going to be spectacular all framed up! So glad you persisted - and succeeded grandly! Sounds like a scary moment with Bruno and I am thankful you are okay. I have been spending time each day shoveling snow from driveway and walkways and have some sore muscles to prove it! But no hibernating for me - back to the easel to ring in the New Year! Happy New Year, Kathryn - stay warm and safe and paint up a storm!

  9. Oh, my goodness, glad you weren't hurt Kathryn ! Surely hibernating is more safe, but we need to see those cows finished first, looks awesome so far ! Wish you a Happy New Year ! xx

  11. Oh do be careful, Kathryn, it all sounds dangerous (I stroked a horse once!)

I wish I could say why I liked the cows so much. It's so fresh and clear; so lifelike and not lifelike at the same time! I think it might be the originality and the complex simplicity!!

A tea-clipper is not a million nautical miles off :)

  12. Hey Kathryn:)HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Funny post, you made me laugh! I'm happy you are not hurt. That's the nice thing about animals; they always remain them self, not caring about the owner... Dont't talk about dogs running away grrrrr
Your cows are so beautiful, like a mirror. Very great job. I love it!!
