The Temptation of the Peony

I absolutely could not resist. The whiteness on some of the leaves was so distracting. And I'd also accidently dribbled a few drops of water on the dark background. I HAD to do something. So I masked the perimeter of the flower, mixed up a batch of warm green, spritzed the page, and let loose. I think it looks much better, but I would very much appreciate some feedback. I thank you. 1. Love what you've done. Now the peony is completely the centre of attention as the green leaves fall into the background - a complement not a rival. Bravo!

  2. I think "after temptation" is phenomenal, the background softens and fades into the background and puts all the attention on the flower. You made a difficult but correct choice! The finished picture is amazing, as the flower floats towards the viewer and the greenery supports, yet stays in the background.

  3. I love it! The whole painting is softened and the peony becomes even more beautiful if that is possible. :-)

  9. Definitely prefer the "after" image, the shadows enhance the colors.

  10. You were so right to follow your instinct on this piece--the softer leaves, without the whites, are perfect; the background has receded and yet is very interesting; and the peony can shine in all its glory. Beautifully done! I am delighted to have found your blog (via your comments on Robin Roberts' blog) and really appreciate the way you share the journey and progress of your paintings.
