Back to Work ...

I left this in disgust a few days ago, and worked on portraits instead.

I took it out again this morning after riding. Those are my paddock boot tips in the photo.

I've darkened the mountains , and am carefully darkening the abutment and girders. It doesn't look too bad when I put a mat around it.

Here's the back of my vet's head. It was the best I could do with one hand, as I was assisting.

It's not something I really like to see - a horse drugged to the point of almost falling over, with his head in a sling fastened to the ceiling, but that's dental care in horse land. Most horses get their teeth done every year or two. Bruno needs his done every six months. He has quite a malocclusion, probably as a result of a broken jaw when very young. He might have been stepped on or rolled on by his mom, or kicked when playing with the other young horses - it happens. Because of this, his teeth wear very unevenly, and he gradually get sharp points and edges on them, which can cut the tongue and cheeks. So today was the day.

He had them done almost an hour ago, so he's probably just coming out of the sedation now. Then he can have his dinner. If they are allowed to eat while sedated, they can choke. There's your bit of horsey education for today.

As always, your comments are most welcome.

  1. Hi Kath
Looking at each view of the bridge painting,,, we love them all. Each one has it's own qualities.
Each one has a mood that can be felt.
We think they are all beautiful. I know one of them is your completed project,,, but they are all perfect- because of the moods they create.
Its like magic that you create,,,, and its not something that everyone can do!

I am glad Bruno is getting his teeth done. You are such a good mommy to all of your animals..

  6. You should be very happy with the bridge right now..the darkening of the mountain and the water really did it!! I love it. POOR Bruno!!! but yes, it has to be done. I always feel badly for animals since they don't understand what's going on..give him an extra oat for me!!

  7. Sometimes we just need to step away for a few days and come back with fresh eyes. I think your bridge looks great. I have to take Red (the hyper one) to the vet tomorrow .... so glad I don't have a horse.

  8. Indeed the bridge is coming out very well. But I think the portraits are just too good. Both in terms of likeness as well as artistic quality. You have done a great job:)
Bruno must have done some really good deeds to have someone like you take care of him. I hope he has got his "bite" back now :)

  9. Your bridge is coming along beautifully - I admire your patience and determination with this as we all know it has been frustrating you - and knowing when there is a need to step back from something and go back to it when you're ready. Poor Bruno bless him - hope he's back to his normal horsy self by now!

  10. The bridge is looking great Kathryn. Ever increasing the contrasts bring a painting to life and make it solid at the same time. I know you will pull this one off beautifully. You always do.

I'm sorry for Bruno's misery, but you are a good mommy and like any good mommy you're doing the right stuff. He'll feel better after he eats--his jaws aren't going to ache after the drugs wear off are they? Do they give him something for that? You gave me an education, but you left out a few details. Dental work can be a pain--for a couple days. I'm totally feeling his distress.

  11. The bridge is coming along nicely - the reflection in the water is perfect! I had no idea about horse dentistry - and find it fascinating! I wonder if Bruno feels about his dentist as I feel about mine! :)

  12. Your bridge looks so great Kathryn. I think darkening it like you have has really made it pop. And my favorite part is the reflection.

Also, poor Bruno!! Although I know he's fine. . . but now you posted those unflattering pics of him on the internet!! What about his pride??
