The Star of the Show - Duke

   This is the second day of the Langley artists open studio tour. I missed most of the action on the first day, when the weather was somewhat accomodating. Today, we had thunder and lightning, and the skies opened ... and dumped! I am dog-sitting my sister's boxers, so we all packed up, and went to the  event. The star of the show was Duke [one of the residents], and I can hardly wait to try painting him, he's such a character.
   Needless to say, I did not sell a thing, hence the comment about the day job.

Getting Ready for a Small Show

   I'm part of an artists' open studio tour, so tomorrow morning I'll trek off to "Fields and Flowers", and set up some horse and dog framed paintings, and bring along some smaller ones [pathetically wrapped in Saran wrap, as I didn't have time for anything else]
   I am also doing a demo on "animal hair and fur" at 1:30. The sketch above is the one on which I'll be working. Below are some of the other pieces I'm bringing.

 

Cats and Dogs

I had a small influx of family today; it was great - two of my sisters dropped in. One of them, Steph, is phenomenal in a lot of ways. Today she did her imitation of a tornado, and swept through my bedroom/studio cleaning, rearranging, and removing stuff I don't use [or fit] anymore. Consequently, my nephew got a flokati rug, and my niece got a beautiful sweater set and a woolen blazer.

  Steph also went under my bed. This is where I stash some of my art paper, and old artwork. This brings us up to date with the title. She found an old watercolor I did about ten years ago. It was for a friend, and was a portrait of his cat. So I thought I would post it, along with some more recent cats and dogs.

   I've been so busy with horse stuff ... sick horse, getting the barn set up for winter ... and dog-sitting my sister's boxers. Finally I have a moment to catch up here. I'll keep it short and simple.
   I love big, elegant but showy flowers. Irises fit the bill. I've done several of the buds and flowers.

   I spent the whole day in "dental hygiene" mode, so I'm fairly drained of any creative energy. I'll just make a short explanation. Here, at the FARM. my landlady is a very avid gardener, with several rose bushes, some of which bloom into December. These are my interpretations.

Meltdown!

   Had an artist's meltdown today ... NOTHING looked good. So, much against my basically "lone wolf" nature, I contacted two friends. One is another artist; she assured me that all artists have these "fits" every once in a while, and all would be right again. The other is a very dynamic horse- and business-woman. There she was this afternoon, hobbling around [ she managed to tear some ligaments in her knee] but still getting everything done.
   So I came home inspired, but left painting for another day. Instead, I spent my time photographing and organizing a lot of my unframed work.
   All of the paintings are on Arches 140 lb. cold-press paper.  The paints are transparent artist quality - Winsor-Newton, Daniel Smith and  da Vinci.
   Here they come, bit by bit ...
