Before I Go out and Play with the Lad ...


W/w wash of aureolin, brown madder and ultramarine. Then I lifted, while still wet, some of the highlights of the face.

RATS! I did not make up enough of my soft black mixture. 

Second black wash, and then some lifting while still wet. I must sat I am really thrilled with the effect. I am not as thrilled with what I see in the paper, and which becomes more apparent as each wash is applied. I am usually very careful about clean hands and surfaces while handling paper, so I'm not sure if it's me or something in the paper. I will say that I am very keen to try some Fabriano.

  2. Hi, it is interesting to see the way the highlights stand out from the dark. Very cool effect. That is too bad if those other marks show on the paper, they may blend in as you go but still it will be a worry. I have not used the paper so not sure if it is the paper or something that touched it. Good luck.

  3. I always use Fabriano, what kind of paper do you use normally ? Lifting while wet is a great system and Bruno is coming out beautifully. I can see what you mean about the paper, to me it often happens on the first piece I use on a Fabriano block. Wish you a great start of the week. xx

  4. The effect here is amazing! What a fascinating process! Maybe somebody else handled the paper before you purchased it? How frustrating though! :0)

  5. You are really teaching me something about watercolor Kathryn. I really know nothing about the craft of the medium. I did look up Fabriano--aside from being a quality watercolor paper, it's also a town in Italy. Bruno is going to be beautiful. Your initial drawing says so. I'll be watching your progress on this one. Blocking out has me stymied. I'm afraid of the substance and what it would do to my brush--and how long you can really leave it on before it will mar the paper?

  6. Kathryn, it looks like you've run into one of those pieces of paper that has the sizing wrong - leaving spots here and there. It's not your doing - it happens sometimes. I had that happen in my Carol Carter workshop and we were doing washes!!! YIKES!! There was no way I could make it look right but I worked with it anyway - should have started over. For this painting, it may lend an old-timey look to the painting because I kind of like what's happening. If all you do now is work of the pretty boy, I think you can make this one work out for you :)

  9. That is really cook, Kathryn! I've never tried that technique exactly that way. I'm excited to incorporate it! It's looking beautiful and mysterious!
