Pups in Progress ... or ... One Out of Two ...

I've done more with puggy - strengthening color intensities, and working on the eye ...

... laying down a road-map of her dark colors, and starting the butterfly.

I LOVE the eye in this, but ...
I think the overall proportions are wrong. She seems to need more space above and in front of her face. She does have a thick neck [I believe there must be some labrador in her] but it looks wrong here. And I am not overly fond of the background colors. I used alizarin crimson instead of my usual quin. violet and it looks too bright. A duller, darker background would be an improvement.

It was a typical Vancouver-type winter day yesterday - rained hard all day. So other than running a few errands [delivering froggy Christmas cards, grocery shopping, library ...] I painted all day. Sometimes when I get into a long period of painting like that, I lose some focus. It looks like that happened to Roxie. I am going to have to change her neck somehow, and paint her in a different format. If you have any suggestions, PLEASE let me know!

Thank you for dropping by, and your comments are most welcome!

  2. The idea of the Pup smelling the butterfly is really cute! It really helps to show off her personality! Looking good!

  3. They are coming along nicely. I know what you mean about her neck being to thick. Try cropping it in a different place, it could just be the spot you picked accents it more.

  4. I agree about the butterfly - it does add a bit of charm to an otherwise very charming portrait! Watercolor is so different from oil - I would not have any idea on how to advise on Roxie. She is looking good to me! Your wintery, rainy weather appeals to me - we have beautiful dark cloudy skies today but so far, not much rain.

  6. I love these two dogs!... The second one is coming along beautifully. I don't know how her neck looks like but just take your time and I know you'll nail it, Kathryn.!!! I think painting the background a bit darker like you said would look better....WONDERFUL work....I look forward to your next post...

  7. We came back to look again, and again, because we keep thinking to ourselves- how can it be,,, that you can capture the soul and paint it into your painitings. It does not matter if its geese- horses, doggys- or butterflys- you capture the sould, and the paintings come to live,, and you amaze us,, how can it be?? just how can it?

  8. i gotta say gunk, i think you might have a touch of the old dreads! the painting looks perfect to me. everything you pointed out i just can't see. no smoke. take some time from it, the background, in my opinion, is perfection, her neck is in perfect proportion and the space between her head and the top is great!. AND YOUR PAINTING A PUG!!! how more perfect can you be! seriously though, i think it's really coming along perfectly, but only you know, but sometimes we just can't see cuz we've been looking to much! happy Thanksgiving your gunkness!
