You Can't Win Them All ... or ... My Impatience Is Showing

A clematis I started , that will never be finished

They don't all work out. In my case, it is usually because I have been too keen to start, and to finish. I don't do proper value sketches and color plans. And sometimes I have a feeling the paint should just FLOW off my brush, and do exactly what I want! WRONG!!! The clematis has some good points, but the tea dribbled on it negates finishing it.
The rabbit was to be for one of my co-workers, who at one time had a rabbit called "Smokey". Unfortunately, the rabbit has turned out looking like a "schmoo" - a cartoon character form decades ago; it was basically a white blob. Bunny aside, the rest of the work I like. The soft background washes I always love, and the grass effect I like as well. I'll definitely use that look again.

The sketch doesn't look too bad

  1. I am laughing, not at you, but because of you and how much I feel the same way. I was just working on a portrait for a colleague of mine who is leaving soon and I got so into it that I didn't take a proper break between colors and ended up smudging her black eyeglasses all across her face and ruining the whole portrait. I could have wrung my own neck. You have to laugh and move on, what else can you do?

  2. Finish it anyway - the tea may just give character.. and clematis get all sorts of spots in weather!

I like the bun, he looks good to me - but then, I don't know the reference of which you speak :)
Perhaps your friend would like him?

  5. Your bunny is wonderful!! So well painted, and you caught that "haunted" look in his /her eyes.
Regarding the Clematis I think Pat is right, you should finish it, because even if you have an image in your mind of how it should look, sometimes the unexpected is what makes a painting special. It looks good to me... give it a try! xx

  6. I also believe that should stop the work of the clematis, it may not be what you wanted, but just the experience you bring to the future.
I loved the rabbit, I thought it was very good.
