HELP!

The real thing
So far ...

To my eye, I have somehow made poor, old John look too feminine. Does anyone have any ideas? My eyes are crossing from looking at this all afternoon.

  1. Looking at the photo, I would say the suntan on his face needs to be deepened in your portrait - and also your shadows need to be darker. Darker shadows will make the rest pop, scary as it is, putting them in :) xx

  2. Kathryn, what he looks is too young. He needs some of those wonderful age lines and wrinkles and maybe widen his mouth a smidge. Keep adding those shadows and he will emerge. Wonderful job!

  3. It doesn't look feminine. All I can see is that it could use a bit more shading in the mouth area and cheek. That will amplify his beard.

  4. Everything is in place for a wonderful portrait Kathryn. I'm not great at offering sound, helpful feedback but here goes. His skin tones appear warmer, the 5:00 o'clock shadow is heavier and the shadow side of the face is much darker, in the photo. You have good shadows on the neck. What do you think?

  5. I don't think he looks to feminine! Silly Kathryn. He looks fabulous! Something that I do when I paint men is look for masculine features and then emphasize them. Make them a little more bold than what you see. Like most men have a very strong jawline, so I would exagerate that, make it a little more square. Or exagerate his stubble, make it a little darker, mroe obvious. :) It looks great Kathryn, don't give up!

  6. Kathryn, I agree with Crystal ! Great job. Maybe more shadows on the left side of his face but very soft because, this portrait is soft inside... Bises.

  7. As the others have said, I think you're being too hard on yourself. It just needs tweaking. Maybe desaturate the photo and your artwork image so you're looking at it in black and white then you'll see where the values need to be darkened to make it pop more. The mouth could be stronger and less tight looking but it really is just small changes that are needed. Congrats. x
