I Seem to Have Painted Myself into the Proverbial Corner

The leaves were much too bright, so I lifted a bit, and then went over them with aureolin and indanthrone blue.

I've reached the stage where I need the background. I would rather not get into more leaves and branches. I thought of doing some graded washes, with a dilute phthalo blue predominant on the top and right, and darkening to indanthrone at the bottom and left. Needs more thought - that's the painted corner.

Here's the hummer, happily feasting at dinner time.

As always, your comments are most welcome.

  1. Sometimes a little pause is necessary to figure out how to go on. I often put a painting away for some time when I get stuck ...sometimes even for months :-) I am sure you will get the right inspiration :-) xx

  2. It's said that watercolour can't be corrected, but you are proof that it's just not true! You always lift, adjust and re-wash and yet it doesn't end up looking overworked like you'd think. Clever! As for backgrounds - ugh, I hate doing backgrounds! I have a portrait of a Labrador sitting in front of a bush to do in pastels next week. The lady wants the background which is just one mass of leaves! I'm not looking forward to that bit, lol :0)

  3. It all looks good to me, but if you need to think it through ... meanwhile, the hummer is wonderful.

Also, have you tried graying the green with red?
I know it will work out no matter what. It always does.

  8. I wonder how you do the background washes, Kathryn. Do you paint around the flower or do you somehow mask it? I ask this question as you are so accomplished and I had this dilemma on my recent watercolor. I ended up painting the background several times right around the horses. It seemed to work okay although I thought I should have done the background first! So many choices!
