More Sketching than I've Done for a While ...

Leaf studies

I've done several sketches of the two poses I found most attractive.  One of the two is more a line drawing, the other a bit more detailed as to shadows. I'll see if Kim can mosey over this evening to choose which pose she prefers.
And I worked on leaves yesterday. Carrie Waller left a note, reminding me to SEE - as in see what you are seeing, not what you think you are seeing. I get impatient, and stop "seeing", and then end up painting what I think is a good approximation. WRONGO!!!
And now, off to the barn for some time with the lad, and some barn and garden work.

As always, your comments are most welcome.

  1. Thumbs up on the nice sketching and seeing, Kathryn! It's all about that left/right brain switch isn't it? xo

  3. I choose horse sketch #2. His neck is graceful and his eye is clearly the focal point. But I'm not your client.

Are you looking for work as a botanical artist? I think your insistence on photographic realism comes from your dental training. This gestural artist thinks you shouldn't drive yourself crazy. The serrated edges of a rose look very time consuming:-) These leaves look great to me.

  4. Wow! Your sketches are amazing! I love those veins which pop right out from the surface of the skin - very well drawn! :0)

  5. Your drawings are so beautiful Kathryn. :) You always put life into your portraits, which doesn't always happen when drawing with grids from what I've seen. I love your sketches. And Carrie's advice is perfect, something I still have to remind myself of! LOL. :) Enjoy the garden and your lad. :)

  6. You can certainly draw, Kathryn. The horses are a wow. I prefer the first until I look at the second!

Turning over a new leaf? I read somewhere that we never see an object until we draw it.

  10. Hey Kathryn:) I hope she choose nr. 1... But they are all very nice. You have a great talent on sketches (and more!). Don't let the leaves become a nightmare for you. Your leaf studies are already very beautiful!! Especialy the ones on the left. Take care!

  11. I love your horse sketches. My favorite is the second one, love how you did the neck right off the page. I hope drawing is as relaxing for you as it is for me.

  13. I love to see what you create. You feel stuff and you sketch it.
Your heart is singing to a tune that your pencils and paintbrushes understand.
I love the horse sketch and those leaves.
I just love to watch what you do.

  14. the drawings are mesmerizing. Both are so pretty. I wonder which the client will choose. Somehow the negative space around the second one adds something that is indefinable . The first one is equally as nice - must have something to do with rhythm around them?
I just keep going back and enjoying - eye candy!
