Meanwhile ... Back at the Swamp ...

I've been playing around with landscapes. I wish I could be doing this in some hillside Italian village, but ...
This is on "0" Avenue, the road following the U.S./Canada border. At one point, there is a fabulous swampy area. I drive by it several times a month, and have always found it quite attractive - in a marshy sort of way.
When starting something new, I tend to be quite tentative. You can see this in the photo.

I've strengthened it a bit, but it still needs oomph.

Another view of the swamp.
I enjoyed painting these two, and I have another more complicated one on the board to paint, as well as another pair of shoes.

Thank you for dropping by. Your comments are always welcome.

  1. Knowing you, you'll find the oomph you think it needs. You subject is a tough one, which is why I never attempted to paint the swamp down the road.

The swamp by our place is swamp-green--it's thick with algae. The trees are tall, gray, dead pillars. What was once their branches,is now semi submerged with just portions sticking up from the goo. It's a scary looking place where you know there's a lot of wildlife beneath the pea soup surface you wouldn't want to swim with.

  2. To me painting landscapes is the hardest thing to do because the wow factor is so difficult to find( to me ) . This looks very promising and not at all ordinary , I know it will be very special !

  3. Isn't it wonderful that you are so versatile, Kathryn! There is nothing you cannot paint - from shoes to chickens and from horses to landscapes! I have always found swampy areas to have a sensual kind of lonely beauty - hard to capture in paint but I think you will do wonders. Hugs to your Aunt - I hope she is fully recovered.

  5. Tuscany would be nice, but we have to be content with the landscape we live in. :) I'm sure you'll give the swamp the oomph it needs! I am trying some landscapes myself, it is an different way of painting all together.

  6. Looking good so far. I like an atmospheric swamp, puts me in mind of a James Herbert book :) x

  10. Hello Kathryn:) I think you're on the right way! I love the dead trees for sure. The edge from the water is a beautiful line in the painting. It really has a swamp atmosphere. I would love to see the finished painting. Go for it:)

  11. Love the new landscape Kathryn! I have been thinking of trying them myself. I do really like the subtle strength this has, I don't see it as tentative, but well planned. :)

  12. Hats off to you because I hate painting landscapes, so I avoid them at all costs, lol! I don't know why I don't enjoy painting them, but I just don't! I really should take a leaf out of your book and do one again one day. Still, even though I don't like painting them, I do like looking at them - and yours is lovely :0)
