You KNOW I Couldn't Leave It at one Go ... Round #2 for the Old Shoes

I had to start again. The last version had too dark a background, and was the wrong color. I tried to give it a shower, but too much brown remained, so ...

My colors are phthalo blue [green shade] for the bright blues,  and a variety of grays - aureolin and permanent rose, with either cobalt blue or indanthrone. The mesh was not that hard. I wet the area, and dropped in some of the lighter gray. It formed lovely spots suggestive of mesh.

I am happily fussing with details, but wondering what to do with the background. Any suggestions?

Thank you for dropping by, and your comments are most welcome!

  2. Kathryn, your backgrounds are always so lovely. Will you choose a color that is opposite the blues like oranges / browns or use a color that is close to the blue on the color wheel such as violets or greens? Or a neutral? Opps, I'm supposed to be coming up with suggestions and ideas not all these questions!!!

  4. The complementary would show up those blue/green toe pads--pale I would think. Some playing around on scrap might be in order. Peach came to mind.

That hall is beautiful. What a place to have a show! Your niece is lovely too, a great model for you. You are an artist on fire. It's catchy.

  5. Yes, you could use a colour to harmonize, or a complimentary... that said, I wonder whether a background is even necessary? You could throw in the shadows under the shoes and that might well be enough! :0)

  6. I always like what you choose, Kathryn....ALTHOUGH, I like a darker background maybe with a hint of the color in the shoes.?

  8. I see lots of good advice here. Follow your intuition Kathryn, just like you always do. Color is such a personal language, only you can determine the hues that will support what you are you trying to say or convey. I love your shoe series!

  9. If it were an oil I would make a very dark background to really make the shoes pop, but being it a watercolor I would just do some brownish shading under the shoes. I think YOU know best though :-)

  10. This is looking awesome Kathryn. Can't wait to see the finished painting! Backgrounds are a challenge for me so i'm afraid i am unable to help out. I know it will look great whatever you come up with. I think i might have to make me a new pair of shoes too! :)
Thank you for your visit to my blog and for your kind comments which are always appreciated. Our new pup is Mr. Jiminy Cricket. He was a lost and sick little fellow whom we rescued and have decided to keep. He now is a full fledged member of the family and we love him so. Quite the character too!

  11. Kathryn, i just spent an enjoyable 15 minutes or so exploring your blog. You have a fantastic collection of very creative works. I am so impressed with everything, If i had to select a favourite it would be "If Boots Could Talk". I had a pair of boots just like them! You did an absolutely amazing job and your colour choices are superb. A very well balanced painting.
