The "EEK!!!" Stage of a Painting ...

You've all heard, and probably gone through, the "ugly" stage with a painting. The "eek" stage is the one before that! This is definitely the "eek" stage here ... two little brown blobs with a larger pink blob below.

She looks more like a dog - eyes darkened, and the first wash of a background color.

... and Drake looked quite strange at this point.

I quickly added some shadows, and more detail around eyes, nose and mouth.

He looks almost handsome. Right now, I am doing thin glazes almost everywhere on the painting. The colors I am using are quin. rose, cobalt blue, quin.violet, quin. burnt orange and indanthrone. The painting is moving well, and maybe ... just maybe ... I'll finish this week. I am thinking of doing a soft, sfumato background, lighter on top, darker below.

Thank you so much for dropping by!

  1. We love seeing the progress of your paintings. They always amaze us and make us smile ☺

  2. I love this stage! The dog comes alive to me once eyes and nose are painted!

  3. Hehe! I can so relate! I call it the 'teenage stage'... the one where I am tempted to just put my foot through it! But usually it all comes together in the end... Patience is a virtue :0)

  4. We always go through the "eek" stage....this is why I admire you for doing WIP ... the end result is always amazing. Love it so far!!

  5. me too! i love the progress shots you share gunkness!! i am so familiar with the "eek" stage and so impatient i often run for hilsl because the eekness is too much to bear!

thank you so much for your kind words and i wish you the best of everything in the coming year....the year of the Gunk!

  6. I know what you mean when you say the EEEK stage.....that is a dangerous time.....in the old days I'd tear up the EEEK stage.....oh no....
but even your EEEk stage looks good:)
    Happy New Year!!!

  7. Love your 'EEK' stage .... I get those but don't show the World till I get to the 'Ugly' Stage LOL. I know this will be another triumph!

  8. Don't tell me I just threw out an eeek painting and shouldn't have! I had wiped out so much of it, I figured it was easier to start from scratch. My eeek was a poor initial drawing. Underdeveloped does not an eeek painting make. These dogs are not dogs of a painting. :-))

  9. Good evening Kathryn,
As soon as the eyes are in they just come alive... Funny how a little more detail on the eyes does the trick. Drake already looks alive... Can't wait to see more.

Thank you so much for your most encouraging words. I always enjoy reading your comments... I am so happy you enjoyed.

  10. I don't see ekk,, I see magic happening!
