DANCE OF THE KILLDEER

I think I did this last summer, and thought it finished. But I decided to dig it out and have a critical look.  One of my shortcomings in watercolour is not carrying the painting to completion. I remember a series of classes I took in Vancouver years ago, and the instructor's favourite phrase to me was "darker ... darker'', get those values dark! So I soaked the killdeer for a few minutes, stapled her back down, and finished her - I did some more detailing, intensifying some of the darks to bring out the feathers, and gave her  "home" - something reminiscent of her habitat. I call it "the Dance" as she reminds me  of that as she goes into her distraction display.

  1. The darks do it and prove that tutor right. It was very good before, now it's excellent

  2. Nothing wrong with adding darks, but I really liked her without the background - these was something fresh and quickly painted looking about her. Oh, well, just my opinion. We have these at our local university and they are always running around the parking lots - plus trying to call you over to their fake injury to keep you away from their chicks (which are usually in the shrubs right by the parking lot!)

  4. There is always that fine line between stopping just short of perfection for the piece and overdoing an aspect of it and wishing you hadn't done so. It is what it is, and both ways are wonderful for their own reasons. You are a fabulous artist. There's a saying, "those who can do, those who can't teach." LOL You are a doer, for sure.
