Bete Noire

It really is a lovely, art nouveau styled bridge - the colors at sunset are glorious.

Started out with some very, very thin washes ...

then drizzled in some more of the same colors, a bit  more dense ...

Made the mistake of darkening the water TOO much

Played with this small version, to see if more vibrant colors would work ...

not bad, once I get the shadows in ...

This painting has become the bane of my artistic self. I so much want to do something vibrant and different. I've been reading up on landscapes, looking at landscape artists I love [ Michael Reardon and Thomas Schaller are at the top of my list.] I do believe I am even dreaming about painting it! I have these wonderful ideas floating around in my head, and when I try to put them to paper ... YUCK! But I have another plan, simpler in a way than what I've been trying, so we shall see.

As always, your comments are welcome and much appreciated!

  1. What a lovely art nouveau building, I had no idea from the black and white photo! I believe these yuck-moments indicate the beginning of something new: new approaches, new subjects, new techniques. Those ideas in your head will find a way on paper! Looking forward to see them!

  2. Well, I HATE painting landscapes - I really do! So I always admire those who do it! Over the years I have evolved in to a still life painter by nature. It is always nice to try something new from time to time though and with every effort comes a new lesson and we just keep getting better! It's hard to see by a WIP but you always seem to come up with a beauty in the end - so have faith in your self and all those things floating around in your head will eventually land on the paper ;0)

  9. Learning any new technique makes you feel like a beginner again, with all its insecurities - but you'll crack it - looks to me like you are well on the way! xx

  10. Dear Kath,
You're challenging a loose style and wash, in my eyes. Quite nice. Please be kind to yourself. Never say negative about your work. Let us celebrate even small achievements today that we know they'll lead us into a big difference in the future.
    Kind regards, Sadami

  11. Hold on Kathryn... It is often a long and sometimes frustrating work tryng to grow and paint new things ... for me it is, at least: and I'm going through a period like this, how many sheets I throw away! But this is what we are, and just yesterday I read that this is the essence of a real artists: continuing to learn, and spending the hours in the studio, despite everything. You are so talented, and it is admirable your desire to do new things, and I'm sure you will succeed soon! A hug!
