Another Portrait from Beginning to End

Sketch

Grays for shadows

Start flesh tones and eyes.
It really is looking quite scary at this point!

Hair roughed in. More color in the face.

Yet more hair and face colors.

Two glazes of a black in shadow areas of cap. I wanted to use ultramarine, and it doesn't go as dark as I needed here.

I painted light and scrumbled colors for the gown, and  an irregular wash/application of ultramarine for the background. I may have to glaze a bit of pink over part of her face, as the blue seems to have drained some of the color from her face, but I'll wait till tomorrow, when I can see it in daylight.

As always, your comments are most welcome.

  1. Your painting style is meticulous - I would love to see you paint and can imagine deep concentration - I love the bee further down and good idea to rough up Andy - he looks great as does this lovely lady. It's amazing you have time to paint with everything going on at the farm - I love this time of year when the hay is getting collected in and seeing the hay bales in the fields - would make a great painting!!

  3. Lovely work! I enjoyed seeing the step-by-step, too. I agree with your instinct about a light glaze of pink to brighter her up and have her skin not fade out against the blues. Really good! Is this family or a commission?

  9. Perfect portrait. The model will surely love this. I agree with you that something that will either enhance the face colour or subdue the blue around her neck might make this gem shine even more :)
    Best wishes,
