Wet Paint ... or ... Taking a Risk

I needed a complementary background ...

And I needed something light and loose to suggest foliage ...
so I taped off the image as best as I could with Saran wrap and masking tape, and did a splatter  and spray with aureolin and cobalt blue.

It's turned out all right, and there was only a bit of leakage onto the pony-tail. I'll touch it up a bit tomorrow.

I've also been playing around with this sweet pea, but it's just not grabbing my focus.

As always, your comments are most welcome!

  1. Well I think you did more than a fair job with that saran wrap. The background looks good--great--just the right values for the figure and if there are any seepage spots on the pony tail they are minute. I can't see them. I do admire your knowledge of watercolor techniques and your patience to work with them.

  7. Kathryn, your portrait is looking fabulous! I love what you did with the background. It's soft and it does give it the foliage look you were after. The flower is coming along really nice so far too. I think you just have to sit back and go slow and before you know it, your darks and lights will be there. Your florals always turn out wonderful!
