And It RAINED and RAINED ...

I took this photo this morning. Last night, it was all under water. I waded through about 8 inches of water going to the barn at 10 PM. The rain was pounding so hard, that when it stopped, I looked up and wondered what was different - the noise had disappeared. We really do get some torrential downpours here.

It's still very wet, and yesterday the water was to the bottom of the large cedar tree. I was busy changing Bruno's blankets, from soggy to not-quite-as-wet, and finding a dry spot in his shed to put his food. I now have an intimation of what it is like to have a flood, and it is very disturbing. I think the worst is that one feels so completely helpless. But enough of that! It's stopped, and I will be out cleaning up and setting things straight in the barn.

I have done all the shadows for now. It's time to get some local color on the flowers. My swatch is on the left. I'm thinking of cobalt blue and quin, pink at the upper left, and quin. pink and phthalo blue in the lower focal area. I have a feeling I will have to go darker on the left and bottom, and take some of the leaf shadow colors into the flowers. The other option may be to crop, but I'll get some more color on first.

Round #2 for the barn swallow did not work. I wanted to get a backlit effect on the bird. I still like that idea, and will try to get it using graded washes instead of random blobs of color and shadow.

As always, your comments are so welcome!

  1. Oh my goodness, that is a lot of rain! Your hydrangea is looking good and I really like the nice warm colors in the swallow. Looking forward to seeing how you develop it. I am trying very hard this year to work on more than one painting at a time. I do admire that you can do that so well. Blessings.....

  2. Ugh . . . I know what it is like to deal with torrential rain, and taking care of horses, NO FUN! Glad it has subsided. I like the new start on the Hydrangea. Is is a little bigger than you usually do?

  3. Your photographs are wonderful. Paintings in themselves. The flower looks good just as it is. If it was mine, I might work more on the background than on the flower. But, I know nothing about watercolor; you are the maven in that area. --Back lighting did me in today. Good luck.

  5. Hopefully the ground will dry out now. It can't be much fun for Bruno either.

  6. We have just had the wettest year on record, so I know how you feel. It's forecast to snow for three weeks and we Brits never cope with snow!

Love the way the Hydrangea is coming along, and the swallow. watching for further developments!

    Stay dry!

  7. It reminds me of the floods we had here just before Christmas. A nightmare for so many people! Hope it absorbs soon :0)
Wow, that flower is already utterly beautiful just as it is! I wouldn't do too much more! :0)

  8. The hydrangea is coming along SO beautifully, Kathryn. I can't wait to see that "splash" of color in it. I like the bird so far as well...and I can only imagine how much rain you had when looking at those pictures!!!!

  10. All that standing water is kind of scary. I am glad the rain stopped when it did. We had snow again last night and I was out early with my shovel and then took a long walk in the cold crisp morning air. Magnificent! As I am sure your hydrangeas and back lit bird will be.

  11. Hey, we did have a lot of rain but now it is clear and bright. I hope you are able to enjoy a bit of it.
I love your flowers, I agree with your thoughts on the background. Don't start cropping yet!!

  12. You are a courageous woman for sure! :) Bruno must feel really lucky. The flower painting as well as the swallow seem to be on the right track. Looking forward to seeing the finished versions.

  13. I really like how the hydrangea is turning out -- you always like your shadow shapes and make them interesting abstract shapes. Looking forward to see how it will progress with the soft petal colors!

For the swallow, and I think the light effect can be seen even in this one that you considered "failed" -- the darker left side contrasting to the right side does give an impression of where the light is coming from. If you could introduce a little bit that dark color to the right side of the swallow, linking it to the left side and gradate it from left to right, it may just do.

  14. You've been getting lots of rain and we've been getting lots of snow! Yuck!! I've had enough! But 'tis the season I guess. :)

I love the progress on the flower painting, you do those so well Kathryn. And I personally really like the bird painting. The background is beautiful in my opinion. :)

  16. Love how your two paintings are proceeding, Kathryn!
You're right...the thought of a flood (or any natural disaster) is pretty horrifying!
Sorry about the water ponding at your place. If that were in my yard, I'd have to stock it with large mouth bass! Lol!
