HEY! ... It's Starting to Look Like an Owl

It sure doesn't look like much when I start!

Still unrecognizable ...

... maybe???

Definitely looking owlish

I used aureolin, quin. siena, quin. burnt orange, quin. violet, indanthrone blue and ultramarine blue [which I have not used for years, as I usually get variations of mud, but I needed a really warm blue to use with orange]
This is as far as I got today, in between running an animal spa/restaurant/fitness centre. I was a bit busy feeding six animals several "home-made"  meals, and exercising Bruno, and  walking and playing with the Boxer Girls. It was a great day. Bruno was a superstar genius; he is picking up the yield-to-the-leg and carry-your-own-front-end so very well! He cracked me up, when he started doing the leg-yielding exercises [from the ground] all by himself. He was so proud of himself today!!! And I apologize to those of you who do not speak "horse-training". If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
And as always, please leave your comments - I love them!!!

Boy Genius

  1. Looks like you had a great day. :=)

I think with the eyes and horn developing the owl is looking great. I like her expression.

The colors are looking good at this point, definitely not muddy looking. I like the complementary palette.

  2. Dear Kathryn,
Thank you for sharing the interesting process and the lovely news on Bruno. Certainly, YOU're so proud of him, aren't ye? Enjoy drawing and have fun in looking after your animal family members.
    Kind regards,Sadami

  3. the owl is looking very good!
Missy wants to know if she comes to stay can she please have a home cooked steak with a side of cheese :)

  4. I really enjoy, as always ,to see the way you 'build ' your watercolor; and the owl is surely looking like an owl, coming out looking very good.Your day sounds very busy but also very joyful. I think you are doing what you like, so what could be better :-)

  5. Gosh- you are a busy bee!
Its fun to watch the owl turn into an owl!
Yes,, it truly looks like an owl to me.
    hoot hoot

  6. I used to ride horses, but I loved the 'being on a horse' bit and didn't get in to any other part of it really, so yep, it's all straight over my head, lol! But, aside from that beautiful horse, the owl looks like it's going to be a winner!

  7. thanks for that WIP, Kathryn! I always enjoy the "process". Looks like an owl already!!!

  8. HI Kathryn, I love your owl. He's looking very beautiful! I don't know a thing about horse training. He's a beautiful animal. You love animals too, we only have a cat and dog but I love them. take care, love,Diana

  9. Definitely an owl - and a wise one it seems! Your boy genius is looking wonderfully healthy and fit - he looks like a champion to me!

  10. owlish and a great start katharyn ... bruno sounds smart !

  11. Your painting is looking fabulous:)) I'm not sure how you manage all your zoo:)) I have a hard time with my own menagerie--2 boys, 2 cats and a Moose (bull mastiff). I'm afraid we don't get home made meals everyday, you are to be commended:)) I don't speak horse training but I love to hear that Bruno is proud of himself, aren't animals so funny:) Our Moose is in the "dog house" this week because he has gone after the cats twice. I wish I spoke dog some days!!
